A Type Family — February 2025
ZFinal Exhibition of the Wintersemester 2024 course Type as Narrative lead by Nina Reisinger

Hey! And I cooked! One of you clears the table and
the other one does the dishes

Description:This project was created during my exchange semester at the Communication Design department of HTW Berlin. In the winter semester of 2024, I took Type as Narrative, a course led by Nina Reisinger. Through it, we explored the history and significance of typography, the distinct identities of various type foundries, and — with particular focus — the contributions of women to the typographic landscape. The course also included fieldtrips to design studios across Berlin.

For the final assignment, given complete creative freedom, I designed five single-use typefaces that together form the artwork A Type Family.
A Type Family is a collection of five typefaces, each containing only a partial alphabet that together tell a story. That story is about my own family. Through a series of interviews, each member shared their interests, perspectives, goals, and dreams, and I worked to translate those qualities into a typeface for each person, myself included. The result captures something of who each of them is: their characteristics, emotional states, and the way they present themselves to the world.

The narrative is set around a Friday dinner table conversation, a natural choice since Friday is traditionally pancake day in my family. Written in both English and Dutch, the story is meant to be accessible while staying true to my roots as an exchange student. Names are intentionally left out so the viewer's focus stays on the interplay of type and color rather than on identifying the individuals. The final piece was printed on six long strips of paper using an inkjet printer.
The full story both in English and in Dutch
